about

Almanac, by Joseph M. Colombo and Danny Clay, is an imaginative and texturally rich collection of eighteen electronic sketches that serves as an aural field guide through vivid sonic tableaus. Each track of Almanac transports the listener through various soundscapes, stopping briefly to observe and experience the unique timbral and textural character of each new destination.

The sounds in Almanac are created purely through digital synthesis. Colombo and Clay are able to use this medium to create distinctive and dynamic timbres that can range from dark and abrasive to light and ethereal. The work defies a standard musical characterization as it straddles the many lines between ambient, noise, sound design, and classical music. This unique approach to the composition of this work gives it a surreal and strikingly visual quality.

In the way that almanacs exist to provide their readers with statistics and general information, this work presents each track matter-of-factly without flourishes or embellishments and without a discernible narrative. The transitions between tracks are often abrupt and seemingly unconnected, but it’s this disconnect that allows us to see into the composers’ creative processes. The tracks in this work are presented chronologically in the order that they were composed. Colombo and Clay worked individually while creating portions of each track and then gave that fragment to the other to use as source material to complete the track. Both share authorship on each track and have chosen not to disclose which parts are their individual contributions.
